Glossary

Clobetasol – generic name for a steroid medication often used to treat psoriasis and other skin conditions like eczema, atopic dermatitis, etc.

Clobex® – brand name for the steroid medication Clobetasol propionate. FDA-approved for the treatment of psoriasis and other moderate to severe psoriasis that respond to corticosteroid treatment.

Dermatitis – general term for certain kinds of itchy, red, inflamed skin conditions. There are many types of dermatitis.

Dermatoses – general term for any skin abnormality or the appearance of lesions on the skin.

Eczema – A specific variety of skin disorders that cause itchiness, red, scaling, weeping, oozing skin. Also called atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, hand dermatitis and asteatotic eczema.

Erythema – skin redness and inflammation.

Plaque – Red, thickened areas on the skin. Common in some types of psoriasis.

Psoriasis – a disorder in which skin grows and replaces itself too rapidly, causing a buildup of red, thickened areas (plaques) with silvery scales.

Scaling – also called flaking.

Corticosteroid responsive dermatoses – A group of skin disorders that improve with treatment of topical steroids such as Clobex. Includes atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, sehorrheic dermatitis and several other skin conditions.

Clobetasol propionate has been shown to suppress the HPA axis at the lowest doses tested. In controlled clinical trials, the following adverse reactions have been reported: burning, pruritus, dryness, pain, hyperpigmentation around resolving plaque, irritation and atrophy.

Clobex® (clobetasol propionate) Spray, 0.05% is not recommended for use on anyone younger than 18 years of age. Treatment should be limited to 4 consecutive weeks. The total dosage should not exceed 50 g (59 mL or 2 fl oz) per week. Patients should use Clobex® (clobetasol propionate) Spray, 0.05%, only for the minimum period necessary to achieve desired results. Clobex® (clobetasol propionate) Spray, 0.05% should not be used on the face, groin, or axillae.
